Energy Battles

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia sharply cut gas flows to Europe via Ukraine on Tuesday in a dramatic worsening of a pricing dispute with Kiev that threatened to disrupt supplies as far west as Italy and Germany.
EU members Austria and Romania said deliveries were down 90 percent and 75 percent respectively, and German energy firms warned there could be gas shortages in Europe’s biggest economy if the dispute dragged on and sub-zero temperatures persisted.

Like it or not, the most important influencing factor of the world today is energy resources. Those who have access to the energy can manipulate other countries, and create extremely volatile situations very quickly. Russia has a large amount of power over all of Europe, because of their natural gas resources, and many Islamic countries hold a lot of power over America, because of their oil resources. This may be gloom-and-doomish of me, but I can’t seem to get around the fact that the pieces are lining up in many different ways.
